Experts call on more youth to acquire ICT Skills

By John Agok

More than twenty (20) young professionals in Information, Communications Technology (ICT) have completed training on “virtual digital skills” in Juba and are calling on more young people to acquire ICT skills.

The one day training drew twenty five (25) participants online each from twenty three countries in Africa including South Sudan.

The Executive Director for Koneta organization Mr. Denaya Denis urged more South Sudanese youth to develop themselves by acquiring more knowledge or skills.

“Koneta is a Bari word meaning let’s do it together. I am calling all energetic youth to develop their careers especially in ICT by acquiring Digital Skills Training that will change the face of our economy,” Said Denis

Eve Eyayi, an ICT expert and the Executive Director for Gogirls initiative urged more girls to join ICT

“When I was doing ICT course at the University I discussed this my idea of “Go girl’s initiative” with other colleagues, the aim of the initiative is to bridge the gap in technology by empowering Women to participate in digital space,” she said.

Eyayi said she wants the initiative to inspire young women in South Sudan and bring them to a level where they will be able to participate in ICT equally with their male counterparts

“We need to discourage this cultural stereotype from our communities where women are denied access to devices like smartphones with internet for online communicating,” she underscored.

Another ICT expert, Nelson Kwaje who is also the Director of “DefyHate South Sudan” said more effort is needed to encourage more young people acquire ICT skills.

“What the way forward for South Sudan is to engage young people especially young women in participating equally with men. We need nobody left behind in digital space.” Said Kwaje
