IOM’s Mohamed Abdiker speaks to journalists in Juba

The International Organization for Migration will phase out the provision of humanitarian assistance in South Sudan and refocus on resilience, recovery and development projects, its Regional Director for the East and Horn of Africa, Mohammed Abdiker said.
With years of crisis, South Sudan has only been on the receiving end of humanitarian affairs and has not focused on building for the future.
“We understand that we do have South Sudanese who required humanitarian assistance every day, we understand we have displaced persons but we cannot continue with the idea of handing out temporary shelters and blankets every year, 10 years after independence,” Abdiker told journalists in Juba on Friday.
“We are advocating to our international partners to start moving on to transition recovery and development,” he said.
“We cannot let South Sudan continue being a humanitarian field all the time. It’s not right, people just sitting getting some handouts every month.”
Abdiker is on a visit to South Sudan to meet people and government concerning IOM projects in the country.
He expressed encouragement at the peace deal implementation in South Sudan and urged the international community to support the initiative.
