South Sudan’s government on Thursday received food supplies from the Turkish government meant for soldiers in the cantonment sites.
President Salva Kiir’s advisor on Security Affairs, Tut Gatluak, who is also the head of the National Pre-Transitional Committee, received the food supplies on behalf of the government.
Erdem Mutaf, the Turkish Ambassador to South Sudan said his country full supports the South Sudan’s peace process.
“Turkey’s donation of 11 metric tons of foodstuff to cantonment sites which I am handing over to Hon. Tut Gatluak today is another strong sign of our support to the 2018 peace process.” said Mutaf.
Mutaf disclosed that he would visit all relevant government institutions in Juba to further diversify and deepen bilateral relations.
“Having exemplary relations and good cooperation with the South Sudanese government, Turkey as a close friend will try her best to continue contributing in this process of peace in South Sudan,” he said.
Since 2019, soldiers were reported to be deserting cantonment sites because of poor living conditions, including lack of food, medicine, safe drinking water and shelter.
According to the South Sudan’s 2018 peace deal, the country is supposed to train and graduate a unified force of 83,000 personnel to take charge of security during the transitional period until elections are held.
