South Sudan’s Minister of Environment has raised red flag on the proliferation of expired goods on the market from neighboring countries.
Josephine Napon, Minister of Environment disclosed that Juba has become dumping ground for expired food and other commodities.
“The food that we are consuming sometimes is risky for the health of South Sudanese because we import everything from neighboring countries,” Napon said during the opening of a three-day national conference on agriculture and food security in Juba on Monday.
She cited expired sugar in Kenya that was in May 2019 imported into South Sudan.
“I can give an example when there was expired sugar in the Republic of Kenya, Some of this sugar got its way to South Sudan,” said Napon.
Napon urged the Ministry of Trade and Industry to examine all food supplies entering the country.
