South Sudan: Unity State deploys police to curb accidents during festivities

Despite being submerged in floods, Unity State has deployed hundreds of traffic police officers to ensure accidents are minimised on the few remaining roads in the capital Bentiu.

According to Traffic Police Officer, Domai Kai Dak, his office has deployed more than 200 traffic police officers in Bentiu town, Rubkona town and along Bentiu IDPs camp with “the aim is to limit road accidents in this Christmas festival.”

Six drivers have been arrested this month already “for violating traffic rules,” Dak told Juba Echo in an interview in Bentiu.

Four cases of accidents have already been reported only on the road leading from the town to the Internally Displaced People’s camp adjacent to the UN base just outside.

That road has registered 150 case of road accidents with more than 70 deaths in the last five years, Dak said.

Drivers and cyclists have been instructed to desist from over speeding on the few remaining roads of the town.

The Bentiu IDPs camp Chairperson Thaya Wicyoak Leay has asked the police to patrol inside the PoC and also conduct a door to door search for spears, knives, and guns ahead of Christmas celebrations to limit criminal activities.
