South Sudan receives consignment of Medicines from India

South Sudan’s government received a consignment of medicines for treatment of malaria and COVID–19 from India on Monday.

Speaking upon the arrival of the consignment of medicines at Juba International Airport, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Peter Mayen Majongdit, said that the donation will be channeled to the vulnerable people in the country.

“We have received these medicines through the ministry of health and we will send the medicines to areas that are in need of emergency,” said Majongdit.

“Given the fact that last year many areas were affected by floods and many communities in rural areas are experiencing issues to do with malaria and other diseases. The medicines will be able to help particularly the most vulnerable ones that are actually in need of treatment in most rural areas that are very difficult to reach,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Indian Ambassador to South Sudan S.D. Moorthy, revealed that New Delhi handed nearly 6 tons of medicines to South Sudan’s government.

He said that the consignment of medicines will be used to treat malaria, coronavirus and other infectious diseases, adding that the government of India will always stand with the people of South Sudan.

 “This year we realised that South Sudan needs international and Indian support especially this upcoming lean period, we donated a lot of antibiotics and basic live-saving drugs, this consignment consists of almost 6 tons of medicines,” said Moorthy during the handover in Juba.

 “This is the second consignment of medicines we are donating to South Sudan. We hope to send the consignment to the needy people who are in great need of support,” he added.
