South Sudan: Machar directs cessation of hostilities with rival faction

By Ruot George
First Vice President Dr Riek Machar who is the commander in chief of the main opposition group, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition has directed his forces to cease all acts of hostility with a split away faction.
In a statement issued this week, Machar said the directive comes in line with positive talks between South Sudan and the Kitgwang faction.
“The Kitgwang group has signed on January 16 2022 in Khartoum a defection agreement to SSPDF,” part of his statement read.
“The Kitgwang group are now part of SSPDF and SPLA – IO forces should disengage and ceasefire immediately.”
Last week, government officials led by the presidential advisor on national security Tut Gatluak traveled to Khartoum, the Sudanese capital and reached peaceful agreements with the Kitgwang faction.
The Kitgwang faction led by the former chief of staff general Simon Gatwech Dual broke away from Machar in August last year leading to fighting which killed many people in the Magenis area of Upper Nile State.
