South Sudan delegation to Sudan meets detainees, urges dialogue after coup

A high-level mediation team dispatched from South Sudan visited Sudan this week with a mission to ensure Sudan gets back to the path of peace, security and development.

“The mediation team returned home from Khartoum after several days of intensive talks with the Sudanese leaders in an effort to address the political tension in Sudan,” a statement they issued after arrival in Juba on Friday said.

The team led by the presidential advisor on security Tut Gatluak along with foreign minister Mayik Ayii Deng among other senior officials meet with Abdel Fattah Al-Buran, the leader of the Sudan coup.

Burhan claimed his action was in the interest of unity of the country.

The coup has however been met vehemently both from civilians in the country and international communities.

Protestors are unrelenting on the streets of Khartoum, demanding a civilian government.

The international community is demanding Burhan hands back the government to the men he deposed, led by Abdalla Hamdok.

Hamdok and several ministers are still under house arrest.

According to the statement, “the mediation team shared views with the detainees and urged them to be open to dialogue so as to resolve the political impasse in the country.”
