South Sudan begins permanent constitution making process

South Sudan’s government on Tuesday launched a Permanent constitution-making process workshop.
The three-day workshop is aimed at reaching a consensus among the parties to the country’s 2018 peace deal and other stakeholders such as civil societies and youth on a new constitution.

President Salva Kiir Mayardit said constitution making should be an all-inclusive process.
“It is absolutely critical that it reflects the aspirations of our people for freedom, equality, justice and prosperity for all,” Said president Kiir.
He urged all the parties to the 2018 peace agreement to discuss and resolve emerging difficulties and work together to produce a document that will put South Sudan to a permanent path of Stability.
“The start of this process signals South Sudan to produce a document that will commit us to the resolution of the national issues through peaceful means.” He added
Dr. Abdallah Hamdok, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Sudan and Chair of IGAD urged south Sudanese leaders to make wider consultations on the permanent constitution making.
He said that the constitution needs to address issues to do with culture, religion, history and development.
He pledge to help south Sudan on the permanent constitution making.
The Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC) Interim Chairperson Maj Gen Charles Tai Gituai said: “The launch of this historic workshop today marks a significant milestone in the design and making of a durable constitution for the Republic of South Sudan.”.
South Sudan has been governed by Transitional constitutions during the years of civil war that followed independence in July 2011.
