South Sudan backs African Union position on Russian invasion of Ukraine

The Russian invasion continues event as the UNSC go for the vote

South Sudan has decided of its position on a vote on the Russian invasion of Ukraine at the United Nations Security Council on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, western countries implored the East African nation to vote against the incursion of Ukraine.

Last week, the African Union urged Russia to desist from its invasion, and asked both it and Ukraine to establish a ceasefire and political dialogue with Ukraine.

South Sudan Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister told the Juba-based Eye Radio on Wednesday that the country supports a foreign policy that provides for non-interference in the affairs of the other countries.

“Our stand as African continent is together and our ambassador in New York stands with this group, so we don’t have a separate stand out of the African continent,” Dau was quoted by Eye Radio.

Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine last week, describing it as a “special military operation” aimed at dislodging “neo-Nazis” ruling Ukraine.

According to Ukraine’s government, more than 350 civilians, including 14 children, have been killed during the invasion, while more than half a million people have fled the country.
