South Sudan Army Demands Investigation into Ceasefire Breach

The South Sudanese army is demanding the team monitoring ceasefire in South Sudan to look into an attack that left at least 7 people dead.

The attacks, by suspected rebels of the National Salvation Front occurred at Loka on the Juba-Yei road, followed by an ambush on a commando unit traveling on the Juba-Lokurbang stretch of the same road, army spokesman Lul Ruai Koang said.

“SSPDF would like to inform the people, the region and the international community of the blatant violation by NAS and the scaled up offensive operations against our forces and civilian targets in different parts of Central Equatoria state including a surprise attack on Loka in the early hours of June 10,” Koang said in a statement issued on June 11.

He said the “unprovoked” attack and road ambush resulted in unnecessary loss of lives.”

 “In the road ambush 4 rebels were killed and around 3 soldiers died in the road ambush, the number is fluctuating, we have not yet receive full details,” he said.

“SSPDF reiterates its commitment to cessation of hostilities agreement and calls upon CTSAMMVM to investigate.”
