Kiir sacked Finance Undersecretary, appoints ex-state Minister

By John Agok

President Salva Kiir has on Thursday evening dismissed the 1st Undersecretary of the Ministry of Finance and Planning, Mr. Garang Majak, replacing him with John Deng Wal, the former State minister.

The Republican Decree number 52/2021 read out on the state-run Radio did not disclose why the senior government official was fired.

However, it only confirmed the appointment of John Deng Wal as the new undersecretary for the country’s financial entity.

Mr. Wal, the incoming undersecretary previously served as the Director-General for the Ministry of Finance of Jonglei state before he becomes the minister for Finance and Planning of the defunct Fangak state.

Garang Majak, the former Undersecretary applauded the leadership for the position he held in the last few years.

“It has been a valuable experience both personally and professionally,” he said in a statement.

The outgoing government official affirmed his willingness to supporting the new undersecretary where necessary.

This is the second Republican decree issued by the President within the national Finance Ministry after the former Minister was fired last year.

Though the President has continued to sack most of his officials, it seems like sacking is not a solution to the economic and political woes.
