Juba team makes breakthrough in Sudan Coup mediation

By Richard Sultan

South Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation yesterday announced that its team has made a breakthrough in their mediation efforts to find a peaceful end to the coup in Khartoum.

“Our High-Level delegation led by Hon.Tut Gatluak Manime has just concluded a fruitful meeting with the Sudanese Military Leadership headed by Gen. Abdel Fatah Al Burhan in which they reached a major breakthrough on the status of the political detainees. The Sudanese Military Leadership headed By Gen. Abdel Fatah Al Burhan-who is also the Commander in Chief of the Sudanese Armed Forces- has agreed to release today almost all the political Prisoners who were arrested last week following the dissolution of the Transitional Government”, reads part of the statement from the Foreign Affairs Ministry and International Cooperation.

The release of all political detainees has been a major demand of Prime Minister Hamdok’s team before any meaningful negotiations can start in reversing the October 25th coup.

South Sudan’s government’s delegation travelled to Khartoum on Saturday to mediate the current political crisis in Sudan following the coupe carried out by the military late last month.

South Sudan said if the Sudan’s crisis is not resolved it can become a regional problem. South Sudan’s oil passes through Sudan on its way to the international market. Juba is concerned that continuous conflict in Sudan will negatively affect oil flow,

South Sudan’s President, Slava Kiir had urged Sudan’s military leader Abdall Fatah Al -Burhan to provide space for dialogue.

Sudan is guarantor of South Sudan’s peace deal while Juba mediated an agreement between Sudan’s armed groups and the Sudan’s government that was headed by Al Burhan.

The delegation was headed by the National Security Advisor to president Slava Kiir Tut Gatluak to meet both the military and representative of the civilians’ forces.
