Juba Residents against City Council’s Plans to contract an international company to collect garbage

Several residents of South Sudan’s capital, Juba have expressed disappointment in the Juba City Council for its plans to hire an international company to collect garbage in the capital.

Yesterday (on Wednesday), the Council’s deputy mayor for physical infrastructure and development told Radio Miraya that they (the Juba City Council) were working on a budget and creation of bylaws that will govern the ‘international company’ and its operation.

However, many learnt South Sudanese seem not to agree with the Juba city council’s plans arguing that South Sudan has qualified environmentalists and health professionals who can deliver to the expectation when given the chance.

Lawrence Dufee says, “Rubbish collection is a huge business in most cities, surprised leaders in Juba City Council never organized this. Allow local companies to bid for the right to collect rubbish.”

“Garbage collection is a national pride because it shows how clean we are as a nation, if Juba City Council current leadership are not able to do that, then they should lay down their tools, go home and leave competent people to do the job,” comments Paul Micah

Buksy says South Sudan has a long way to go if up to now it still thinks about contracting an international company to handle such work when there are hundreds if not thousands of local companies struggling to get similar contracts.

The Juba City Council since its establishment has been struggling to keep Juba City clean with all efforts proving not to bear fruits.
