Gov’t mulls upgrade of faltering healthcare system

The national ministry of health says it is planning to upgrade the health system from primary healthcare to a tertiary level.

Yolanda Awel Deng Juach, the Minister of Health said on arrival from Dakar, Senegal that the government plans to improve the healthcare system through partnership.

“In South Sudan, we are only dealing with primary health care, there is a need for a tertiary health care system, that is surgery, anaesthesia, obstetric and nursing care, those are areas that are ignored,” said Juach.

“We are going to have a partnership with mastership, mastership only deal with countries along the ocean and sea, we will improve the relation with countries along the ocean and South Sudan is going to benefit,” she added.

The newly-appointed minister returned from the Senegalese capital where she attended a symposium for African regional ministers of health held between May 4th, 2022 to May 7, 2022.

South Sudan’s health care situation is currently in distress with inadequate health facilities, which are often inaccessible. The country’s health system has further been affected by subnational violence.

Juach said the Dakar Declaration is going to be endorsed by African heads of state on June 2, 2022, adding that the African roadmap from 2022 to 2030 is the struggle for African independence in the healthcare system.

“Our main focus is primary healthcare. We are going to improve working together in the sector of the healthcare system, we are going to improve our health system, strengthening it,” she concluded.
