Eastern Equatoria State calls on journalists to embark on civic education

Eastern Equatoria State is urging journalists in the state to conduct more civil education and ensure that residents of the state are aware of their rights and duties.
“Journalists should try to specialize so that they get better at what they do, let’s have journalists who only report on human rights, health and politics.” Said Abuna Auxilio Odume, The Director General in the Ministry of Information and Communication in Eastern Equatoria State.
Abuna was speaking at the opening of a workshop in Torit organised by the Union of Journalists of South Sudan.
The workshop is on reporting on constitutional-making process, gender, human rights, ethics, safety and protection.
The training is supported by UNESCO.
“Journalists should understand the constitution-making process so that they can report or produce programs that people can make people understand and join the process.” Said Oyet Patrick Charles, UJOSS president.
Thirty one journalists from across the state are attending the four-day workshop.
“We will conduct an election for office bearers in Eastern Equatoria Satate on the fourth day of the training.” Said Mr.Oyet.
He added that UJOSS with support from UNESCO will move across the country to carry out trainings.
