Ceasefire monitor decries occupation of civilian premises in South Sudan

The Ceasefire Transitional Security Arrangements Monitoring and Verification Mechanism (CTSAMVM), the multinational body that monitors compliance with the peace agreement has decried continuous illegal occupancy of civilians houses in several parts of South Sudan.

Maj. Gen Teshome Gemechu Aderie, the Chairperson of the Mechanism told the media briefing in Juba on Friday that the situation was prevailing without registered progress since the Board last sat.

“The situation at cantonment sites continues to be desperate and CTSAMVM has observed no progress.

“The situation with training and vacation of civilian buildings, unfortunately remain the same with no observed progress since the last board meeting,” Maj.Gen narrated.

The senior official noted that though they have been no clashes between the peace parties reported in the recent days, he said the clashes among different factions within the SPLM-IO after Kitwguang declaration on August 3, 2021 in the area of south East of Magenis remained tense.

“CTSAMVM is very concerned about the risk that incidents pose to the peace process. We call upon IGAD and RJMEC to urge the parties involved to take the necessary step to avoid clashes and adhere to the ceasefire as well as protection of civilians,” said Aderie.

The official said they have recommended IGAD and R-JMEC to urge the parties to take immediate action on these activities so that the required security arrangements can be implemented.
