Bor Hospital in Jonglei State of South Sudan lacks gynaecologists and obstetricians to handle complicated cases, according to the state’s health Minister.
“The hospital faces many challenges that include lack of consultants such as obstetrician, gynaecologist, surgeon and paediatrician which makes it difficult to deal with complicated cases,” said Atong Kuol Manyang, Jonglei State Minister of Health during inauguration of Outpatient Department at Bor Hospital on Thursday.
Kuol disclosed that the hospital also lacks essential medicines.
“We also lack life saving medicines like the ones for treatment of malaria, there is also no anti-rabies, anti-venom let alone medicines for management of conditions like asthma, diabetes, hypertension and cancer,” she said.
She called on the national Ministry of Health to assist the state Ministry with funds to carry out health assessment to help in identifying needs of the hospital.
“Our plans are to carry out a health assessment in all nine counties, then capacity building focusing on Primary Health Care but due to logistical challenges. We are requesting the National Ministry of Health and partners to facilitate it,” she added
She revealed that there is shortage of hospital beds, making it difficult for patients to be admitted at the facility.
“Currently, maternity and paediatric wards have small capacities resulting in women and newborn babies sharing beds,” she disclosed.
