Aid worker killed in Unity State

By Chondok Stephen Magei

A humanitarian worker has been killed in Koch County of Unity State over a suspected love triangle.

The 36-year-old Mathiit Both Duor was killed on Friday morning by Gatkor Riak Phan, the husband of the woman he was suspected to have an affair with.

Dour worked for World Relief, a church-based humanitarian organisation as a driver.

He was shot while on his way to work.

“The incident was about sexual intercourse,” Ruot Riak Teny the Director of the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission in Koch told Juba Echo by phone.

Prior to the killing, Duor had admitted to having an affair with Phan’s wife and was fined seven cows by the county authorities, Teny said.

“He fired the man and he escaped away from Koch and we do not know where he is right now,” he said.

“As a RRC Director I really condemn this humanitarian (worker’s) killing.”

Aid workers operating in Koch County have been briefed about the issue and urged not to panic, Teny said.

“The County authority is working hard to settle the incident amicably,” he said.

This brings to three, the number of aid workers killed in the country this month.

On February 10, an aid worker was killed by crossfire during fighting in MirMir in Unity State, Sara Beysolow Nyanti, Humanitarian Coordinator in South Sudan said in an emailed statement on Thursday.

Nyanti said the same day, a nurse working with an international aid organization was killed and several civilians, including aid workers, injured in Agok town due to sub-national violence in Twic County, Warrap State, and the Abyei Administrative Area.
