A CIVIL SOCIETY INAUGURATES TRANSITIONAL JUSTICE RESOURCE CENTRE IN JUBA

Residents of South Sudan’s capital Juba, have a new Transitional Justice Resource Center.

A South Sudanese Civil Society known as Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) and the United Nations Mission in South Sudan inaugurated the Transitional Justice Resource Centre in Juba on Wednesday.

Edmund Yakani, the Executive Director of Community Empowerment for Progress Organization urged South Sudanese people to begin telling the truth and documenting events for future references.

“This center will be focusing on documenting human rights abuses including sexual violence committed during the conflicts which began in 2013.” Said Yakani.

Chief Guest at the event and the Acting Undersecretary of the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Dr. Gabriel Isaac said the Ministry of Justice and constitutional Affairs is working to implement chapter 5 of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of Conflict in the Republic South Sudan.

Chapter 5 of the South Sudan’s 2018 peace deal provides for transitional justice, accountability, reconciliation and healing.

It sets out plan for formation of among other institutions, a hybrid court to try perpetrators of violence in South Sudan.

Mrs. Irena Igloua, Senior Human Rights Officer for the United Nations Mission in South Sudan- Human Rights Division says the United Nations Mission in South Sudan- Human Rights Division is ready to support justice, accountability and reconciliation in the country.
